These “extreme embroideries” which resemble traditionally composed oil paintings are by League artist Maria Piñeres. Born in Colombia and raised in Brooklyn, Ms. Piñeres studied painting at The Art Students League and went on to graduate from Parsons School of Design.
Her mother and grandmother taught her “traditional fiber and needle arts at an early age.” However, her use of needlepoint was self-taught with the help of a “How To” book by former actress Mary Martin.
Ms. Piñeres has had numerous solo and group exhibitions including “Pricked: Extreme Embroidery” at the Museum of Arts and Design here in New York and “Celebrity” at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona. She is represented by the Walter Maciel Gallery in LA.
We’re so proud to have shared Ms. Piñeres’ artist story with you. Muchísimas gracias por todo su empeño, María. ¡Estamos bien orgullosos de ti!
