Artist Hank Willis Thomas and photographer Emily Shur re-imagined Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom From Want,” one in a series of four iconic paintings inspired by FDR’s 1941 speech to Congress.
The story goes that in 2012, Hank Willis Thomas saw a poster of Norman Rockwell’s painting of a family seated around a holiday table and “decided to create a tableau of his own.”
As some of you know, Mr. Rockwell studied at The League as a teen and Mr. Thomas visited us to give an artist talk in 2016. That year, he co-founded For Freedoms, “an artist-led organization that models and increases creative civic engagement, discourse and direct action.”
As you gather with your family—comprised of relatives, friends, artists, and yourself—we at Artmakers wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!
